Catcher Max Ramirez was placed on waivers Monday. This means Koyie Hill has won the back-up catcher spot. Any team can claim Ramirez now, but have to keep him on their 25-man roster.
The Cubs acquired Ramirez this off-season from the Boston Red Sox, who had claimed him just a week prior from the Texas Rangers. Ramirez has been placed on waivers each time because he is out of minor league options, and must stay on a team’s MLB roster or be Designated for Assignment and placed on waivers.
The Cubs chose Hill’s defense-oriented play over Ramirez’s bat, and that leaves the roster at 25, and the Opening Day roster finalized.
